Search Results

The summary page generated by Search indicates the total number of results found and lists the results in descending order of correspondence to the search criteria, with 25 hits listed per page.

A maximum of 500 results are found for each search. If the result you require is not found, either click the Back button and specify narrower search criteria or refine your search as described below.

To enable navigation of search results, links to each page of results can be found at the foot of every summary page. Clicking on a result links to the relevant article page. Search terms are highlighted on article pages. The article pages for a set of search results can be browsed (without returning to the summary page) by clicking the NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons.

Refine Your Search

If the number of results for a particular search is very high, it is possible to refine the search using the options in the left-hand pane of the results page. You will find that the Search Results are broken down by Article Type and by Subject. By clicking on People, Signpost or Thematic you will select the entries that have been found to contain your search term within that criteria. You can also refine your search by clicking on any one of the subjects in the By Subject list.

For example, to refine your search for 'Particularism' click on People in By Article Type. Biographical articles found to contain 'Particularism' will be displayed. Clicking on Signpost will display the Signpost Articles containing the search term. You also have the option of selecting any of the subject areas in the Subject list. Having selected People in By Article Type, you can further refine your search by selecting 20th Century which will list any biographicals articles on people in the 20th century containing 'Particularism'.
