Article Summary
Mazzini was a leading figure in the struggle for Italian unification during the nineteenth century. A theorist of nationalism as well as an activist, he also promoted nationalist movements elsewhere in Europe and advocated a federation between the European peoples. His writings consist mainly of essays, the most famous being the Dei Doveri dell’Uomo (On the Duties of Man) and Thoughts on Democracy in Europe. He has been seen as a forerunner of the liberal nationalism advocated by certain contemporary political theorists.
